Baber Azam’s wicket is celebrated by Muhammad Rizwan and Ish Sodhi during the warm-up game against New Zealand.

Mohammad Rizwan, the wicket-keeper batsman for Pakistan, and Ish Sodhi, the leg spinner for New Zealand, shared a beautiful and humorous moment during their team’s warm-up game against New Zealand in Hyderabad for the ICC World Cup 2023. This incident exemplified the sportsmanship and camaraderie that frequently distinguish cricket as a gentleman’s game.

The event took place at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium during the 18th over of the first innings. Ish Sodhi was in the middle of his delivery stride when Mohammad Rizwan was forced to leave the crease due to a sudden shower. Sodhi made an appeal while continuing his run-up and removing the stumps without pausing.  Rather than engaging in a tense or confrontational moment, Rizwan responded with a good-natured spirit. He acknowledged the playful turn of events and initiated a warm hug with Ish Sodhi, which was reciprocated in the same friendly manner by the New Zealand wicket-keeper.

This incident demonstrated the true spirit of cricket as a sport that fosters respect, fraternity, and mutual admiration among players from other teams while also giving viewers a humorous and unforgettable moment. Such actions remind us of the spirit of sportsmanship and the ties that can be formed on the cricket field, transcending boundaries and rivalries, despite the competitive character of the game.

Aside from this amusing incident, Mohammad Rizwan put on a strong performance during the actual game, scoring an undefeated century and considerably aiding Pakistan’s victory in the warm-up game.
